Dog-Faced Butterflies Basket by Jonathan Black
About the Artist: Jonathan Black (b.1968) is from the Douglas Mesa, Utah Community of basket weavers. He learned from his mother, Mary Holiday Black, who revived the Navajo art of basket weaving. Black is known for his brightly-colored dyes and pictorial designs of butterflies, horses, birds, corn and Rainbow Yei figures. His wife, Alicia Nelson, was born in 1975 at Shiprock, NM. Taught by her mother-in-law, Nelson weaves sumac into intricate patterns inspired by sandpaintings and nature.
