Wampum Shell with Barrels Necklace by Nestoria Coriz
About the Artist: Nestoria (Pat) Coriz is a jewelry maker from the Kewa (Santa Domingo) Pueblo in NM. At age 6, she learned heishi, bead and stone work from her paternal grandparents. As a teenager in the early 1960’s, she learned to make silver jewelry from her father, Lupe Pena. Coriz makes her own sterling silver findings (cones, hooks eyes) as well as the silver disks, barrels and beads used in her pieces. She cuts her own large heishi using clam, mother of pearl and turquoise. Her sons Daniel, Rodney and Simon also create Kewa jewelry.
