Plateau: Origins & Beginnings

Summer 1997

“In 1994 the Museum of Northern Arizona embarked on a cooperative effort with Grand Canyon Association and the National Park Service to produce a journal whose focus would represent the shared missions and goals of the three organizations. The success and popularity of that publication, Cañon Journal, resulted in the expanded scope of the current publication, its direct descendant. The partnership which produces Plateau Journal has likewise expanded. Such collaborations go beyond shared responsibility and common goals. They generate a special king of creative energy which produces results far greater than the sum of the collaborative efforts. This first issue, Origins and Beginnings, reflects that energy. From the discovery of fossil be nests in the Petrified Forest of eastern Arizona to a history of visionaries responsible for preservation of this remarkable land, these articles have one thing in common: they are part of an ongoing story of the Colorado Plateau, its people, its resources, its past, and its future.” -Editors
