Small Story Teller by John C. Whiterock
About the Artist: John C.Whiterock, a Diné potter, lives in Tonaleah, AZ. To supplement the family income, his mother made and sold traditional pottery. She learned to make pottery from her mother-in-law and taught John and his brother. John’s figurines represent his female relatives performing daily rituals in Diné life. He makes the smaller figurines from thick, hand-rolled cylinders of clay and builds the larger pieces with clay coils. He then carves the clay into figurines, which dry for up to two weeks before being kiln-fired, smoked with pine pitch, and painted.
