Carico Disk Necklace by Ray Lovato
About the Artist: Ray Lovato, born in 1946, is from the Kewa Pueblo. He began making jewelry at age eleven, learning from his father, Ike Lovato, and helping his mother, Tonita Reano, drill turquoise. After two tours of duty in Vietnam, he struggled in construction before returning to jewelry. Lovato sources his turquoise from a selection of mines, manually grinding each small piece flat before drilling, rounding, and polishing. His necklaces vary from simple chokers to larger necklaces with jaclas.
