"Among Life" Sculpture
Artist: John C. Whiterock
About the Artist: John C. Whiterock, a Diné potter, lives in Tonalea, AZ. His mother made traditional pottery, a skill she had learned from her mother-in-law before teaching John and his brother. John's figurines represent his female relatives performing daily rituals in Diné life. He makes the smaller pieces from thick, hand-rolled clay cylinders and builds the larger ones with clay coils. He carves the clay into figurines, which dry for up to two weeks before being kiln-fired, smoked with pine pitch, and painted.
