“In northern Arizona and New Mexico, thousands of Navajo weavers sit at their looms, creating rugs of long-lasting beauty. They say the rugs come from their mind, from their thoughts: ‘It takes a lot of hard thinking. It’s all that I think about.’ These weavers share a centuries-old heritage rooted in their own Athabaskan beliefs and in tools and practices borrowed long ago from neighboring Pueblo peoples. Over the years, they have demonstrated great diversity in their use of materials, in design expressions, and in their motivations to weave. For each person, weaving resides as much in thoughts as it does in external appearances. It is through concerted thinking as well as active production that today’s weaving emerges as a creative act. Thoughts from the weaver’s identities, shape their world, and guide their woven work. They are thoughts that count.” - Ann Lane Hedlund
